Comments:glad i found your page, alan. i have an old f.a.reynolds medalist trumpet, marked made in Abilene, tx. since there is no longer an fa reynolds, esp in abilene, i have wondered about the horn and mfg and esp. where i could find a replacement valve and cover. interesting to find out that reynolds was local. also interesting to find he was actually well regarded in the industry for his designs. think those olds models have the same valves and bottom covers? thanx.

Comments:Olds Central is a wonderful page. Imagine collecting Olds trumpets/cornets for years and then stumbling across this page! My favorite is my 1953 Studio model trumpet. A gift from my father who played it professionally for many years. It remains the most mellow toned and fastest valved horn I've ever experienced!

Comments:I've had my olds for 10 years now, and was curious if it really was 100 years old, like the person I bought it from said. I've narrowed it down from the information on your site that puts it roughly 1956-1958. Mine is a Olds Ambassador, Fullerton, Ca, # 230257. It is in excellent working order, but the finish is in need of repair, and has 3 major dents. One being on the upper side of the pipe directly across from the mouth piece. I would love to get it refinished and have the dings taken out one day. It's nice to find this site and have the opportunity to share my instrument with you all. I had a Reynolds at one point, but it was stolen from the church I played at. =( I have no idea any information off that one.

Comments:I have a trumpet that has been passed down through family, having been played by my Great Grandfather, Great Uncle, my Uncle, my Mother, and alas myself in junior high. Having recently reacquired it from my mother, I was doing research to find out how old it was and an approximate value. Your website was extremely helpful in my research efforts. I printed out some of the information to keep with the instrument. Now it is time to reacquaint myself with sheet music!!!

Comments:Alan I picked up 1962 vintage Olds Recording when I was in San Diego in February from Steve Dillard at Horntrader.com. It is an absolutely incredible playing and sounding Trumpet. I have recorded a friend and me playing several different horns - including a Schilke B1 and Several Benges. The Recording sounded the best. It had a warm full sound that was picked up easily by the microphone. What a horn? Everyone that has heard or played loves the sound. I never thought that I would ever have had an Olds as my main horn. I am glad I found it.

Have numerous other instruments, mostly vintage, incl. King Silver Sonic cornet (my father used to have a matching pair of tpt. and cornet, but tpt. was stolen), York "long model" cornet, serial # 47672 (ca. 1911-1914), Antoine Courtois & Mille A/B flat/C cornet (no serial #, probably pre-1900) with orig. case, mute, mouthpieces (one has mother- of-pearl rim), cleaning rod, etc., a D. Rancilio (Milan) rotary valve trombone with mother-of-pearl inlay on valve caps and buttons (pre-1900? No serial #), and several other interesting "toys".

My hornsOpra Trumpet (S/N #307500) was made by F.E.Olds & Sons of Fullerton, Cal. and was bought new for me by my parents in 1960. Like many brass players of my generation, I was a Raphael Mendez fan and wanted a horn like his.

I own a 1971 #340667 Olds Mendez Trumpet (brass) for which my dad paid 265.00 in 1971 from Musicians' Supply Shop, West Pico Blvd, W LA CA in 1971. I was a junior at Santa Monica High School and was often invited to play trumpet with Carmen Dragon's orchestra. I still own this wonderful trumpet! But alas, my lip has given way to my age.

Istudied with him for almost 20yrs, and believe his method is the most helpful overall. Most other methods seem to have some of his(Clarkes) ideas in them. "Brass Playing" book is the best didactic look at the realities I've seen. Keep up the good work, Larry Miller

Comments:My parents bought my Ambassador (used) around the fall of '71 when I was going into the 6th grade band. I played all through high school and never thought much about the horn until my son (now entering 6th grade band) and my wife took the horn to a shop to have it checked out. The man at the shop told them we would not be able to buy a new horn as good as the 1957 era olds unless we bought a very expensive proffesional horn. I decided to do some research and found your site very helpful.

Comments:Thanks for your excellent site. Please could I ask if you can tell me anything about Reynolds? I've just bought a Contempora Euphonium that I call identify as having been made in 1965, but just who were they? I learn from your site that they had been acquired by Olds at some time and were still part of the act during the Texas years, and I think the remains may survive as part of Selmer (as, I think, do Conn and King), though I can't find any info on the web anywhere.

With my Besson wearing out, I thought I would give the Olds some serious consideration and decided it was really a pretty nice horn, comparing it with my son's new Conn 80B. I started checking the net and found your site. Great information! I learned that my Olds is Summer of '53 (#98098). I am getting ready to play the lead on the musical The 1940's Radio Show and I think this horn will do the job.

Comments:It was pleasing to read about the old Olds trumpets still in use. This was the first I new that the OLDS Co were no longer in business. They made great horns. The first time I played them was when my teacher George Dobson was in America with the Victorian Trumpet Trio. They brought back a Ambassador,Custom Mendez,Recorder Models. This was in the early sixties.A lot of professional players changed over to Olds trumpets in Melbourne after that.

Comments:I played so many trumpets in the last years, trying to find the ideal horn. Bought an Olds Studio from 1960 for 130 Dollar, that´s it. People spend lot of money for a Conn Vintage One or Yamaha Xeno.etc....Good for economy, but I learned my lesson at last. My Studio plays in tune, opens up when needed, sounds bright and clear ( would be a nice horn for Nicholas Payton, too) and the valves are the best on earth (galaxy ?). Thank you, Mr. Olds, and thank you,Alan, for this great site. Without it I would still blow just something.

Comments:Had a great time perusing the site and its various features. Especially enjoyed reading some of the comments submitted by other site visitors. I've been a professional trombonist and writer/arranger for 25 years and recently have become an F. E. Olds fan and owner. The historical information gleaned here has been very interesting and informative. I've also recently become the proud owner of an early 70's Recording model slip horn. These instruments are like no other and I'm honored to have one. I intend to collect and actively play others. On the lookout for a Super Olds circa early 50's.

I use it to play in a reggae band from Long Beach, CA called Nobody Cares. I'm glad I was able to get my hands on this trombone. Thanks for all the information on this website, it has really helped alot to learn about F.E. Olds, I really respect the guy for making such beautiful horns.

Comments:I enjoyed looking at the Olds info on offer. Re: my Olds Special Cornet: I addressed the mouthpiece problem by changing the receiver. The lacquer was shot anyway, so I put a new standard-bore receiver on the lead pipe, taking care to maintain the proper tube length and fit. (It seems to work well, although I realize a purist would be horrified. I couldn't find a mouthpiece to fit, and hadn't discovered your website at that time.)

Comments:Linked here from Rich Ita's Brass Workshop page. Rich is a great guy. Enjoyed your web-site as well. We're not connoiseur's of horns - Olds or otherwise, but James (almost 14 years of age) is playing one that came into our family as a used instrument in the 60's. We had an emergency visit to Rich's for a bent valve repair. Lacquer is all gone. Thinking of silver-coating it for marching band. Do you think that's a bad idea?
My hornsWe also own a Holton Collegiate cornet that has been around for 40 years as well as a Conn baritone (3-valve) with swivel bell. All three horns are roughly same vintage I guess.

Comments:I grew up playing the violin, dropped it during high school and college, then picked it back up -- as well as mandolin -- later in life. Never thought I'd blow a horn. But during the past two years, as my daughter became involved in high school band, I started researching trumpets in order to know what I was doing when we bought her first "professional" horn. I began to wish I knew how to play, so at age 45 -- based on the information found here and elsewhere -- I have just purchased my first trumpet: a 1962, refurbished Ambassador from eBay. The lacquer has been removed to reveal a beautiful red brass horn, which my daughter says plays great. Now all I need is a teacher!

It appears to be silver. Except for a few bumps it looks really well. Can you give me an idea of the value? I know nothing about brass instruments, but with my discription and your site I think it might be 68 sum odd years old is that right? I found it at a second hand shop for $16.00 Is it that common of an instrument or did I just become real lucky?

Comments:Neat site. The brass world is still mourning the demise of the Olds Company. While I never owned one of their "step up" horns, the Ambassador is probably the best starter ever made. I've owned two - the one I started on and the one I bought used to start my son out on.
My hornsCurrently I play on a Schilke B5L with both the standard and beryllium bells. It replaced a pre-UMI Silver Flair. My other horns include a "French" Besson Meha 4-valve piccolo, a custom Couesnon Flugelhorn, an original "Rudy Muck" trumpet that was my Dad's and a Bb Rotary valve curiosity made by Max Schmelz in Paffau, Bavaria about 100 years ago.

Comments:I love Olds trombones. I am constantly looking for old Ambassadors for my students to use. They are great horns and usable on a professional level. My first good horn in high school 1955 was an Olds Super. One of the best slides of any horn I've ever played. I was stationed in Germany in an Air Force Band with the son of an Olds instrument builder with the name "Plimpton".
My hornsAll horns are Los Angeles. Three early Ambassadors, before the brace was added in the tuning slide. An early 50's Super trombone and a very early trombone in the original case. It is truly in mint, like new condition. The serial is 1738, is dent free and plays beautiful. Tuning is in the slide and the finish is perfect. I also own 14 classic Conns, 2 Kings, a Bach, and a Martin. My oldest horn is a 1907 Conn tuba. My oldest Conn is a 1922 4H. All my conns are Elkharts.

Comments:I was repairngg horns in the late fifites in Baton Rouge, La. came out to California and worked in a repair shop. The business was sold and I needed a job and applied at Olds in Fullerton and to my surprise a was hired. I was in my twenties, I started in 1962 an worked in the valve, piston and silver department.I was a horn maker. The building was big with a high celing. It was hot and a lot of noise from the soldering torches, balling machine and buffing machines. We started at 7:oo AM and worked to 4:00. When a heat wave came we came in at 6:00AM.We had no vending machines or break room. A food truck would come four times a day at break. You had to learn to work fast and still do good work. The more parts you turned out the more money you made.It was a good place to work for a factory job.In the late sixites a lot of people were hired and quality began to suffer because they tried to work too fast. Also the new owners wanted more production. We made so many horns I thought we would run out of people to buy them. For a while we working ten hours a day during the week and eight on Sataday and some people came on on Sunday. We also had a night shift. In 1972 I left Olds.I could see what was going to happen. I had always worked at night repairing horns for a music store. I left olds to open my own repair shop in Anaheim. It was open until 1995. I now repair instruments for Sam Ash Music in Cerritos,Ca. I will never forget my ten years working for Olds. We made a lot of great horns. Made a lot of musicians happy and the people that heard them play. There will never be horns made again like the Olds.Glad I had a part in it. Thank you for this web site. (hope I did not take too much space to tell this story)

Comments:Thank you for your very usefull site. I am a comeback player after 30+ years of abstinence and I gotta say it: I'm knocking myself out! :) I'm playing an Olds Ambassador circa 1955 and a new Jupiter rose brass bell flugelhorn both with Bach 1C mouthpieces. ( 1 for the trmpt. & 1 for the flglhn) I am having great fun and plan to restore the Olds which is in good shape except for the lacquer.I would like to hear from any OLDS maniacs in Mass.

My hornsStarted on a Conn 20B student line. With the standard 7C mouthpiece then I went to a bach 5b mouth piece. Now I play a Blessnig ML1 gold edition, professional model and play that with a bach 3C mouthpiece. I really like the response of the mouth piece and the trumpet.

Comments:Enjoyed your site. Been playing since 1963 on and off. Now play in community band too - actually I am president of the band. Below is my varied horn collection accumulated much to my wife's disapproval. I have endurance problems too - (lack of real practice time, I suppose) I found your mouthpiece selection interesting.
My horns1)Benge is my main horn. Bought it new in 1986. Lightweight and bright. Play on Bach 3cw 2)King 2065 - Green lacquer - cool horn. Is my back up. Plays well, but heavy. 3)Getzen Eterna Cornet 4)Bach Strat C trumpet 5)Yamaha Flugelhorn 6)My high school horn is a Selmer Paris K modified - loved it... going to get overhauled some day 7)..And hve a lousy pocket trumpet by Monique that was a mistake to buy.

My hornsOlds .468 bore "Ambassador" shepherd's crook cornet in silver. Near mint. This cornet should not be confused with Olds beginner "Ambassador" line. This cornet was made to compete with the British Salvationist brass band cornets. This is the finest cornet I have ever played. My other horns (trumpets): Calicchio Studio 2; Holton T-100 Dave Stahl model with adjustable gap receiver; 1953 New York Bach Strad; Jean Baptiste pocket trumpet that goes in the suitcase when traveling. Flugelhorns: Couesnon and Kanstul French Besson.

Comments:Does anyone know about this film? "Success Story". One 16mm film,, sound. Time: 25 minutes. Black & White. F. E. Olds 8, Sons. Fullerton, California. Free Loan. Here we have a kinescope of a live TV broadcast made from the Olds factory on a series sponsored by the Richfield Oil Company, which singled out succesful and interesting industries in.Southern California for conducted tours of the plants. It opens with a young friend of the announcer attempting to blow a sousaphone and from that interesting opening shot carries the viewer on a conducted tour of the factory. The transformation of a sheet of raw, brass, or nickel?silver tubing, and brass rod into the finished product of a beautiful and gleaming band instrument is highlighted by visits with various people in the factory as especially interesting phases of production are encountered. It probably will surprise no one that both Rafael Mendez and "Red" Nichols are present during this interview, nor that Mr. Mendez obliges the TV audience with one of his ever interesting selections.

Comments:Wow, I had no idea how great Olds trumpets are- When I was in high school and college, Olds horns just seemed to have a low profile, and when someone mentioned Jonah Jones or other jazz greats and their Olds', it just went in one ear and out the other. Then my eyes were opened a month or two ago when I was talking to the gifted and inventive John Lynch (asymmetric-mouthpiece.com) on the phone who mentioned how wonderful Olds trumpets were and referred me to this website. I now have three great Olds horns that I bought at a total investment of less than what one decent student horn would cost today, with my "The Olds" being one of the best horns I have ever played anywhere, anytime. Each time I pick it up, I sense the soul of some old craftsman, standing in front of a flame in 1929, weilding this pristine tube of copper that, once forged, went through an unusually brief, dentless, dingless shakedown with its original owner and then basically lay waiting in its case for seven decades until I came along. And yep, this one will never leave until I've gone the way of its maker.
My horns*One fair-mileage 1962 Recording that's really fun to play- has a great, warm tone. *One extremely high-mileage (wow, you should see the second valve!) but well-maintained Super that practically plays itself (could it be the ghost of a jazzman who played on it for those hundreds of gigs?)- this one's my top pick for a long night of combo jazz jammin'. *One practically unused, pristine 1930 lacquer 'The Olds', my best-sounding trumpet, hands down. HUGE, warm-filling round sound at lower volumes, tungsten-steel edge added at higher volumes; notes above high C are welcomed at the loudest volumes possible with absoluetly no backing down by this baby. I am humbled. *Non Olds: mint/almost unused 1961 Bach Strad (just sold on ebay two weeks ago as a "1955"), '70 Strad, Yamaha 6320S, INCREDIBLY sounding '41 Holton Collegiate cornet (has a narrow "trumpet profile" design), near mint '26 Martin Handcraft Dansant, 1890 Wunnenberg cornet, '26 goldplated Holton (Lewellyn?), '59 Getzen Super Deluxe, '50 Holton Collegiate, '62 copperbell Conn Director cornet, '76 York Fluegel, Jupiter pocket, Unknown brand rotary trumpet, misc. others including a 10's (or '20's) Beltone (Czech), my first old trumpet!

I sold it(big mistake)along with 11 other horns in 1994 to buy a 1926 vintage Bach Strad C trumpet. Missed that Super so much that I bought the ca. 1936 Super listed below in Fall 1999 on ebay.
My horns100+ trumpets, cornets and flugelhorns, including an Olds Super #10152, about 22 old New York & Mt, Vernon Bach Strads (the earliest is #14!), about 25 old French & English Bessons, other assorted instruments and about 10 American string rotary cornets, including a ca. 1860 presentation "orchestra cornet" (trumpet) with 4 rotary valves made by Christian R. Comments:Your site very helpful in giving me the dates of manufacture on several Olds trumpets and cornets in my collection. My old Olds Ambassador trumpet, circa 1959-60, still plays and sounds pretty good as does one of my Olds cornets. Built like a "tank" - but a good horn!

Do you have any information concerning Olds French Horns from that era?

Comments:Also an old Olds fan, I have an Ambassador trumpet and cornet (circa 1957) and a Mendez trumpet. I also have a beautiful Olds C trumpet which is silver plated, though it has no apparent model number. I got it to jam with various people so I wouldn't have to transpose - especially with my brother who plays the piano by ear! I have had the Ambassador trumpet since my school days in the '50s, and it has gone through my two kids as they went through junior and senior high school.
My hornsSeveral including the three listed above. An couple of Conns of various ages, a Yamaha pro, Bach Strad, Olds C, Wurlitzer cornet, Benge 60B and piccolo, plus a few other odd balls and collectibles including a Frank Artist trumpet. I'm having fun in my retirement collecting and beginning to play a bit again.

My hornsI've repaired more Olds horns than I can ever count. Overall, a good product. But, whoever designed the 3 point bell/valve/leadpipe brace for trumpets and cornets must have been drunk at the time!!! Also, I wonder why they soft soldered the waterkeys to the hinge tube??? I must have silver soldered a million of them in the last 24 years.

Comments:I enjoyed your site. I agree there is a mystique about the Olds horns. For me the mystique began with a teacher whose playing I admired when I attended summer music camps while in high school. He was enthusiastic about the Olds Recording. I now own an Olds Recording that I like very, very much. I own two newer horns--a Bach and a Callet--but I find I don't pick them up and play them as much as I play the Olds and the Selmer K-Modified (that I played in college in the late 1960's). I also own an Olds Fluegel that produces the loveliest tone I have heard on a Fluegel. Viewing the pictures of the Olds line-up has been a treat. I hope I get a chance to try a Super--

Comments:Finally, I have found a website dedicated to Olds trumpets! This web site is by far the best for trumpets! I own a 1969 Ambassador given to me by my uncle. I wouldn't give it up for anything. I am currently in my senior year with the Kalani H.S. Falcon Band. I played the trumpet for 8 years and have used the Ambassedor for 6. I agree with the catalog when it said that it had ruggedness and comfortable when holding. I march with it all the time and it has never failed me once! Anyway, geat web site and keep up the good work!

I now play my 6310Z with an Olds 7C mpce--it has a very nice tone, is as easy to blow through as a new Bach 7C, and makes the Yamaha sound more like a flugelhorn.

Comments:I love your website! Around 1962 Mom bought me a new Olds Recording trumpet - $25 down and $25/mo from her grocery money - was I ever proud of that horn! I played it exclusively for almost 30 years all through college and as an active adult amateur before finally switching to a Bach Strad. The valves have never been worked on but their action is still the best I've felt. My only gripe was rough tone in the lowest notes - F# at the bottom of the natural range was particularly difficult to sound cleanly. I had my Recording refinished about 1972 but, alas, it has darkened again and I hesitate to have it redone since some definition was lost in the fancy bell engraving the first time. When this horn is in prime condition it's a thing of beauty with a striking tri-color pattern highlighted by the lovely rose brass bell & pipe. Combine these with the forward set piston assembly, the offset middle valve, the spring action 3rd valve trigger (pull ring in to extend slide rather than push out) and the elegant side mounted spit valve lever on the tuning slide, and you have an instrument that is truly unique, even to the rest of the Olds line. I've been considering selling this horn but I think I just convinced myself to keep it (with a nudge from Olds Central-inspired nostalgia).

Comments:Thanks for helping me date my trombones. Still have both from High School '80-'83. After reading the history I hated that I used my Super for marching band. Liked it so much I didn't use my silver F trigger Super Star much. My Super has a silver band around bell with FE Olds & Son, Super Olds, Los Angeles engraved. Is this typical of all super models? Bell has been re-lacquered. Does this lessen value? By your data I place my super around Nov, 1953 & my silver super star around spring 1974. Thanks again.

John Wilbraham, the great English trumpeter who pioneered using the piccolo here, chose it on my behalf when I was studying with him in about 1984. For me, the horn still rates with anything else I have blown. Thank you very much for all your research.

Comments:I bought an F. E. Olds Recording trumpet serial # 127770 (1939 ?) at a country auction in about 1986. It's been well used and there is normal wear of both lacquer and plating but it's in perfect shape otherwise. The valves are gummy as I don't play it and have not had it looked at. It has the offset second valve and bits of mother of pearl on the slides. It also has a tuning slide. It came comeplete with mouthpiece and case. What do you think I paid for it? There was only one other person at the auction who knew anything about the horn and he left before it was auctioned off.

Comments:I recently brought my Mendez Coronet out of the closet to play it a while. It has been pretty neglected since I stopped playing it in high school, 20+ years ago. Thinking about getting it restored in case my kids want to join band.

Comments:Alan & I played 4 years together at NCSU. We were in the band at courtside when NCSU won the NCAA basketball championship in 1974. Good times. Alan had great range and technique. He was the 2nd best trumpeter at NCSU!!
